Tencent launches $5 billion bond sale to fund its AI spending.

Tencent launches $5 billion bond sale to fund its AI spending. Tencent Holdings Ltd has started marketing bonds denominated in US dollars and offshore yuan, in a sale that could raise about $5 billion to support its escalating investments in artificial intelligence. The Chinese technology and gaming giant set initial price guidance for its proposed dollar bonds due in 10 years and 20 years at about 115 and 140 basis points over comparable US Treasuries, respectively, according to a person familiar with the matter. The company is also marketing 10-year and 30-year bonds denominated in offshore yuan, with initial price guidance at about 2.9% and 3.5%, according to the same person. The securities could be priced as early as Tuesday, according to the same person. Mon, 05 2026 AI financing wave The bond sale comes amid a broader wave of fundraising led by global technology companies seeking capital for AI-related projects. Last month alone, SoftBank Group Corp raised the equivalent of $11.1 billion in one of the largest-ever high-risk corporate bond offerings, in a bid to finance its huge AI ambitions. But the offering also comes at a time when investors are increasingly concerned about whether spending on data centers, chips and model development will generate sufficient returns. Proceeds from Tencent's offering will be allocated for the company's general purposes, such as AI-related capital expenditure, with the bulk of that spending directed toward purchasing chips, according to other people familiar with the matter on Monday. Tencent's offshore bonds This offering will mark Tencent's second offshore bond sale this year, and its largest offshore bond offering since 2020. In June, the company raised nearly $4.7 billion through the sale of long-term bonds denominated in US dollars and offshore yuan. The funds raised from the June offering were allocated to refinance debt and for the company's general purposes, including developing AI products and services. Tencent's outstanding offshore bonds are worth about $22 billion, and it has no public bonds maturing this year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. It has $2.5 billion in dollar bonds due in 2028. Tue, 13 2026 Tencent's capital expenditure The company is increasing its AI-related spending in an effort to catch up with competitors such as ByteDance Ltd and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, having raised its capital expenditure on AI and computing projects by 176% to 52.8 billion yuan ($7.9 billion) in the quarter ended in June. Tencent aims to develop AI models that rival the best models from DeepSeek or Moonshot AI, such as the Hy4 model scheduled for later in 2026. The company already operates one of China's largest cloud computing services, similar to AWS, providing computing capabilities to customers seeking to develop their own AI platforms. Tencent's capital expenditure is likely to remain high for the remainder of 2026 and through 2027, indicating annual spending slightly above 200 billion yuan based on second-quarter levels, according to other people who spoke Monday.
